Useful Lessons

At the begining of the semester, and as a first time blogger, I felt very unsure about what I was writing. Especially since I knew that not only my professor would be reading it for a grade, but the blogs were open to the entire world to view and criticize. I’m not at all insecure in my writing, but in doing these blogs I have let go of any remaining doubts I had about my writing.

On top of writing weekly blogs in my Electronic Communication class, I had several assignments that requried me to step outside of my boundaries and create projects with software programs I had no previous experience with.  I was proud of every grade I got, even if they were less than perfect. I would rather get those grades than receive full credit on assignments that didn’t test my comfort zone. The unfamiliarity and time limits of these assignments boosted my confidence level with every finished project. The newly aquired skills weren’t so bad either.

Soundslides, Fireworks and Garage Band were just a few of the unfamiliar programs I gained knowledge in during this class. In addition to doing my project correctly, I had to export them to my blog and/or Youtube. This required organization, using correct file extension and embeding it on the website. These three steps are, in my opinion, the heart of this class. If you can master those, then you will do well.

I have taken two graphic design class in the past five years. Neither of the teachers from those classes taught me the easy basics of touching up a photo (which I partially learned on my own) like Jory Burson did in less than 10 minutes. This helped me further my experience with Photoshop immensly.

Although I may not have a future job touching up photos, writting blogs, making slide shows or podcasts, I learned how to properly distribute these things at the correct places on the interent for your viewing.

The things I learned in Electronic Communication I will use as tools in the future in any field I go into.

Interactive Portfolio

Warning: The link down below is a Flash website, so it will not work on iPhones. I suggest looking at it on a laptop or desktop.

While clicking through portfolio websites in search for the best one, I found some that were too boring to even explore, too funny to understand what exactly the professional’s skills were, or too showy that I felt as if the mirage of flashiness was being forced upon me and ultimately overdone.

I did stumble upon one portfolio website that was created using Flash. This interactive site allows the user to clearly understand who the portfolio is about, their works, skills, contact and other information needed to make a successful online portfolio. The pages within the website transform into a different picture and start with a moving photo and an insightful quote. Next to it is a small white circle you move your mouse over to view the rest of the page.  These smooth and unique transitions are what make the site unforgettable and incrediably impressive.

Immersive Garden is a site that Dilshan Arukatti made to showcase his personal portfolio. Specializing in motion and interactive design, Arukatti is a renowned Art director and his skills include branding, graphic design, website creation, illustration, 3D visualization, animations and much more.

My favorite thing about this site, in particular, is how sleek and controlled the interactive design is.  He combines his artistic skills and computer skills that are required to build such a complex website.  Another admirable quality in his site is a humbleness. Arukatti doesn’t post any pictures of himself. His words are limited and he uses small print when describing his work, skills or personal information.  I like how he let his work speak louder than a written biography.

Arukatti is always searching for the best tools to create the high quality works, which is why he is distinguished with nine different software programs.

A picture-perfect portfolio website is an appropriate medium to display his practice.

Mr. President’s Playlist (Make Up for Blog #6)

You’re on a first date, in the car on the way to dinner or movie. He/she puts a CD in or syncs the iPod to the radio.  This is an important moment for you. Would it change your perception of them if they listened to an artist you didn’t like?

What if they didn’t have any particular favorite artist? Or if they didn’t like music in general?

What if he/she likes every music genre you hate?

Music taste explains a lot about a person and may foreshadow some of their other interests or hobbies.  This is why these questions are important to know to see if they could possibly have some of the same interests as you.

So, is it important to know what the person who runs this country listens to?  Not really, but it’s interesting.  Having done a little research, President Barack Obama’s playlist includes a wide range of music.  On one hand, he has the music he really does like and listens to religiously. On the other hand, he has the music he doesn’t like and only puts on his iPod because he understands that as a public figure, he has to cover all the right bases to ensure a positive reputation. When Ralph Nader was asked what he listens to he responded by saying

“It’s none of your business what I listen to. Obama talks white and listens to white music. He is playing on liberal’s white guilt by grooving to Air Supply and Chicago,”according to newsblaze.com.

Having said that, I can only blog about this from what the media is telling us about the music he ‘likes.’

From that, I can conclude that Obama is definitely a classic music fan including soul and rock. Examples would be Rolling Stones, Miles Davis, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Bob Dylan or pop singer Sheryl Crow. He does, however, branch out and enjoys modern artists such as Jay-Z and Kanye West.

“I love the art of Hip-Hop. I don’t always love the message of Hip-Hop,” Obama said, reported on idolator.com.

It’s been reported that he has spoken with Jay-Z and Kanye about the powerful message that can be conveyed through Hip-Hop, and explains that he sometimes disturbed by the harsh lyrics in Hip-Hop. For example, the degrading of women and the strong desire for flashy, materialistic things.

A top 10 list from The Telegraph online gives us some insight:

1. Ready or Not Fugees (1996)
2. What’s Going On Marvin Gaye (1971)
3. I’m On Fire Bruce Springsteen (1985)
4. Gimme Shelter Rolling Stones (1969)
5. Sinnerman Nina Simone (1965)
6. Touch the Sky Kanye West (2006)
7. You’d Be So Easy to Love Frank Sinatra (rec. 1961)
8. Think Aretha Franklin (1968)
9. City of Blinding Lights U2 (2004)
10. Yes We Can will.i.am (2008)

By reading this post, you will not be able to tell if I am for or against Obama because it is not relevant.

A lot can be said about what music someone listens to. But it shouldn’t be scrutinized or too-heavily judged since there are too many things that factor into the reasons behind their choices in that music. Hopefully, when you go on that next date, you give that band you hate a second chance with the significant other you like.

*Zombie Pop* Commercial

As an advertising major, I decided to make a commercial for this video assignment.  Set in the 50′s, the commercial advertises how to make a douche bag into a zombie (fictional of course) through Zombie Pop! Enjoy.

Celebs I Hate

This week, our blog is a free-write. I’ve decided to share with you some celebrities I hate. It’s amazing how much news goes toward celebrity lives.  America, and the rest of the world, is obsessed with celebrity figures. And maybe I’m feeding that appetite with this blog about these celebs, giving them even more attention.  Nonetheless, I feel like expressing this.  Warning: These are strictly my views and I know you may not agree. Here are my candidates for Worst Celebs Ever (in no particular order):

-Billy Ray Cyrus has birthed a one-hit-wonder “Achy Breaky Heart” back in 1992 along with a child, Miley Cyrus. This song gave way to line dancing, performed by Billy. So in a way, he paved the road to this type of dance and made it mainstream. Maybe as a 5-year-old, line dancing was fun and maybe even slightly challenging.  But after about five minutes, or in my case after 21 years, I come very close to fighting people who take this dance seriously. This man has definitely out-done his 15 minutes and is trying to live out more fame through his daughter, Miley, who I think people are already getting tire of.

-Kristin Cavallari pushed teens into a drama frenzy with her reality show “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County” that aired on MTV in 2004-2006. If you have any clue about how many spin offs have come of this show, then you know who Lauren Conrad is from “The Hills”. But I can at least say Lauren has an interest and skill in the world of fashion. As for Kristin, I’m not sure what skills she holds or if she has any. She may actually be an interesting, intelligent person but no one would know because she advertises herself as a young adult who is boy-crazy and loves to start drama.  I wouldn’t suggest looking to Kristin for a role model of any kind.

-Justin Bieber (you knew it was coming).  Since the beginning of mass media, there have always been the male teen ‘crush’ and Bieber is no exception.  But he is different in the way that he actually looks like his target market: 13-year-old girls.  I know it sounds harsh, but I think the whole world is finally catching on. Just the other night, Conan O’Brien joked about how there was no proof of him actually having male genitalia.  Aside from his looks, the songs are very simple minded, even for young teens.  There is almost no vocal variation or raw talent with in the songs.  Have you watched any of his videos? Although I’ve only seen a few, they are heavy with hair-flips and the one-pointing finger that he constantly aims toward the camera in efforts to make the viewer feel special. I’m not just talking about his “One Time” video. Be my guest and check out his others. Or not.  Justin Timberlake was once in Bieber’s position, and he has matured into a respected musician.  Only time will tell if Bieber will continue to make teen-pop music or develop into a better musician.

The list is short, but sweet. If you think I have left someone out, let me know.

Gotta love pranks

For this week’s blog, we were assigned to find a viral video. With over 900,000 views, this one is one of my favorite prank videos of all time. I think many of us today have been a victim of this type of prank. This, alone, allows me to find this video so funny and relatable and is why I think this is a successful viral video.  Another reason it’s successful because of how well the camera man caught the reactions of their victims. In this video, unsuspecting men, women, children and even animals get thrown into shock.  The impact of this video probably led to several other people putting a train horn, or something similar, on their car to drive around and put the prank into their own hands.  Although I feel sorry for most of these people, I can’t help but laugh along with the drivers.

(One of) The Best Low-Budget Video on the Web

This week’s blog was to find the best video on the Internet.  It’s easy to find a high-budget video that looks fantastic, but much harder find an amateur video done well.  BalloonShop consists of four guys that post funny videos on their own YouTube and Myspace channel.  With thousands of views for each of their videos, they have become an Internet sensation.  This video, however, takes a scary turn and plays around with low-lighting and rough splits to intensify the thriller atmosphere.  BallonShop made this video well because of the flowing sequence of shots, add appropriate music and sound effects and took away the unnecessary noise, didn’t break the 180 degree rule, advertised themselves in the intro, and led you through a cohesive and easy to follow 2 minute story. Although most of the video is creepy, BalloonShop did what they do best provided comedic relief. Enjoy.
